What is Twogether in Texas?
Twogether in Texas is a state-funded initiative for Healthy Marriage Programs to promote healthy marriages, child well-being and reduce the risks of domestic violence. In 2007, the Texas Legislature authorized Health & Human Services Committee (HHSC) to spend up to one percent of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant, approximately $7.5 million per year for two years, for family strengthening and marriage services.
The Twogether in Texas program was approved for $15 million in federal TANF funds to promote healthy marriage programs state-wide. In collaboration with existing marriage programs and the expansion established through HB 2683 and HB 2685, Twogether in Texas funding allows healthy marriage programs to provide an 8-hour marriage education course to engaged couples free of charge.
Our free, 8-hour curriculum prepares engaged couples for the obstacles they will face in marriage and provides them with communication and conflict resolution skills to overcome these issues. Organizations and individuals that will teach the approved curriculum across the state of Texas include clergy, licensed mental health professionals, faith-based organizations and community-based organizations.
How will it help me?
By improving communication and conflict resolution skills in your relationship, you will be better prepared to face the challenges in your marriage. Research shows that marriages often fail due to the simple lack of communication and not enough effort in attempting to resolve underlying conflicts.
Our state-wide classes provide couples with the knowledge and skills they need to improve communication and focus on tough issues in their relationship. By completing the course, you are establishing a solid foundation that enables you to enjoy a healthy, lasting marriage and a happy family.
